'Bling' - the pop-culture phrase used to describe the extravagant jewels worn by the celebrities on red carpets or to fancy affairs has brought an awareness of gemstone jewelry into the mainstream like never before. But prior to that term being coined, we marveled at the renowned Hope Diamond, the Star of India and the infamous jewelry collection of Elizabeth Taylor. I spoke with a friend recently about her love for gemstone jewelry and she shared with me how she can vividly remember when she was a little girl and made her first visit to England. One of her favorite parts of the visit was actually getting to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. 'I was only 4, but I knew even then how remarkable those beautiful gemstones were, and I still remember the awe I felt till this day, that those were special jewels fit for a real Queen to wear. They were beautiful and sparkled like nothing I had ever seen before. I'm sure without a doubt, that day began my love of sparkly stones! I love gemstone jewelrymy friends know if it sparkles, it's for me. Tanzanite, amethyst and pink sapphires in particular are my favorites, but all colors, shapes and sizes are amazingly beautiful to me.'
And so it's been through the centuries. Women and men alike have had a love of gemstones. There is even evidence of mining for gems over 7000 years ago in ancient Egypt. Prior to gemstone jewelry being worn to show wealth and status, it was believed that the stones themselves assisted wearers to be more powerful by giving them the ability to direct and guide the forces of nature. Some believe that this is why Kings and Queens originally began wearing them in their crowns and as jewelry as well as being referenced in places in the Bible as adorning the armor and breastplates of ancient warriors and high priests.
Back in current times, gemstones of course range dramatically in their level of value. Even the same type of stone can span a large price range depending on things such as size, color, clarity, and cut. This makes the choice of gemstone jewelry perfect for all budgets and an ideal gift for all occasions.
