Faith Healer: TicketNest

An exceptional play with a different topic from the usual play fashion. Faith Healer grasps attention of the audience with its genuinely novel topic and extra ordinary acting of three unmatched main characters. A block buster hit written by Brain Friel and directed by talented Jonathan Kent and produced by Sonia Friedman it broke almost all box office records at the Gate while it sold out weeks in advance of the opening night. . It has become the first production ever in the theatre's 78 year history to sell out its complete run before merely playing a single performance.

Faith Healer-the play narrates the story of Frank Hardy, the faith healer normally considered as charlatan, his wife Grace and his all time devoted manager Teddy. The play is covered by 4 beautiful and inevitable long sequences of monologues spoken by the main lead. Two monologues are spoken by Frank, one by his wife Grace, and one by Frank's manager Teddy. Both Frank and Grace tour around England, Scotland and Wales in a caravan, offering the sick people to heal. Well! There are a couple of tragedies also involved at the base of this story, one of that is the untimely lose of Frank and Grace's baby.

The play in itself is outstanding plus the performances from the three actors add the perfect spice to the play. The characters not only posses perfect timing but also the facial expressions and body language that affix incalculably to the outcome. The set is very simple and plain almost to the extent of nothing. Youll see a chair or two with a piece of carpet on a vast black painted space.

As the play unfolds its story audience realizes that the story that is narrated by Frank is not same as the tale revealed by his lovely wife. Though both husband and wife are talking about recollection of the same incident are strikingly different. The exploration of truth is one of the major themes of the play.

Frank genuinely has a gift but unluckily does not possess the capability to turn it on and switch off at his own sweet will. It seems like that at times Frank can be true faith healer but on other occasions or to be more precise most of the times he will seem like a true no more of a charlatan that what normally people assume of him. His best was in Wales where in a night he healed ten people. This was an exceptional exhibition of Franks gift whereas we also see desperate lows too.

Then we have lovely Grace Franks wife. She tells the story from a different perspective. She explains that just after qualifying as a solicitor she ran off from her family with her "mountebank". She is desperately in love with him and is always more than ready to forgive him almost anything. Their life which is mostly on road for twenty years was anything but fun and Grace seems to have almost no regrets in her life.

Teddy the dedicated manager regards himself as a kind of show business philosopher. He is a more than cheerful when he downs five or six bottles of Bass in half-an-hour. Actually you can say somewhat like Patrick Marber's Howard Katz, well character is a manager who is a failed comedian and will go to any expense to promote his acts. The prominent feature of the play is very that all three characters consider Frank Hardy more of an imposter than a medicine man.

It is remarkable achievement by Friel as nowadays its a rare thing to witness series of monologues executed on a large stage. But for Friel it is a candy due to his marvelous gift of deeply lyrical and poetic use of language that gives him power allows him to portray stunning verbal pictures.
