A prize winning rock musical play by Tony and Pulitzer-Rent has won hearts of millions. The show first started in New York City at the Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996. Rents popularity earned the show the title of seventh-longest-running musical on Broadway. Rent is originally adapted from Puccini's opera La bohme. The original story is the musical centers on a group of impoverished young artists and musicians who are struggling hard to survive and create in New York's Alphabet City under the shadow of AIDS in the early 1990s.
There have been a lot of plays written touching the same theme but Rent was one of the first daring Broadway musicals attempt to evidently featuring Homosexual, bisexual, lesbian, and Trans gendered characters. Approximately all the previous productions that treated such sensitive and severe issues had generally been relocated to off-Broadway venues. Rent is also distinguished for its various ethnically cast that absorbed many racial minorities in its cast as well as in leading roles. Rent can be counted as a revolutionary show for constructing counter culture distinction to a traditionally conventional medium. And of course Rent is moderately accredited by rising popularity of musical theater especially in the younger generation.
Rent was a smash hit on Broadway. It bought home both critical compliments as well as the fame. The incredible show newly celebrated its 10th anniversary with a very special stunning performance by its complete original cast on April 24, 2006. To count the achievements I would say this musical earned innumerable awards. Rent cast album comprises the most thriving records of an American musical in roughly 30 years that features a double-disc "complete recording" collection a remixed also a version of the song "Seasons of Love" featuring Stevie Wonder and in addition a single-disc "best of" highlights.
This American musical "Rent" is originally written by Jonathan Larson and directed by Michael Greif. The show is actually about being young and understanding how to survive in New York City. It's about everything and anything like falling in love, finding your voice and also living for today ( www.hrlady.com ). This excellent musical show is only the fifth musical to ever win both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award. The show includes Dancing, Singing and Acting. The perfection of these three arts took it on Broadway. The story of the play moves around eight people they are all the cast members in the musical Rent. Each of them possesses their own individuality and has their own story to tell but altogether they exhibit an excellent performance.
The incredible inevitable cast includes eight inevitable characters. MiMi Marquez has AIDs, shes a druggie. She opted stripping as her profession in the Cat Scratch Club. She uses to go out with Benny. But later when she starts hanging out with Roger falls in love with him. Mimi lives in the same apartment as Roger and Mark. Benjamin Benny the former boyfriend of Mimi and a friend of Roger and Mark. He use to share room with Roger, Mark, and Maureen but after his marriage he is no longer their friend. As his father-in-law is rich and owns an apartment in Avenue B.
Angel Schunard also is victim of AIDs. He is a street musician- a drummer and cross dresser. He starts dating Collins. Then we can see Thomas Collins-Angels boyfriend. By profession hes a teacher at the University, ex-anarchist. He is also an old friend of Mark, Roger, and Benny. Maureen Johnson- ex-girlfriend of Mark is portrayed as a Bi-sexual in the play. Maureen is an anarchist and performing artist. Roger Davis-Mark and Maureens roommate has AIDs. He is also Marks best friend. Sadly his girlfriend April commits suicide after that he starts dating Mimi. He is a songwriter and suffering from a serious major slump. Then there is Mark Cohen. An independent filmmaker and is in doubt what his next film should be about? He shares apartment with Roger. He was ex-boyfriend of Maureen who moved out of the apartment when they broke up. And the last character but of course not the least is Joanne Jefferson. She is working as a lawyer, a lesbian, is dating Maureen.
I havent witnessed such a neatly performed play in ages. Rent is a play that deals with such sensitive issues that are even people are afraid or reluctant to talk about among themselves. All I would say is hats off for all the crew members. You dont believe it, see it for yourself.
